Avoiding afternoon sleepiness

The Afternoon Sleepies
I used to suffer from this big time. Around two or three in the afternoon, I’d start to get drowsy and nothing I did could fix it. I know a number of people suffer from this, but don’t know the reason. The most likely cause is low blood sugar. A large lunch, especially with lots of starchy foods, will cause your blood sugar to spike and then crash. In this state there’s no way you can be productive.

Wow, this is huge because that is a big problem for me. At 3pm I’m completly losing focus and in the last weeks I just went home to have a nap. And yes, I normaly eat a lot for lunch. So here’s a habit to change. I’m really interested if it helps to eat lesser and better.

Kyle Lake died!!!

This morning, Sunday October 30th, our pastor Kyle Lake was involved in an accident during a baptism and was transported by EMS to a nearby hospital. Kyle passed away around 11:30am. Not only did we lose a pastor but we’ve lost our friend. Funeral services are pending and we will update the website as soon as we have more information.

I’m totally shocked!!! I just finished Kyle’s book ‘Understanding God’s will’ which is brilliant! And he died while performing a baptism. God, are you crazy?

Kyle who is about my age died this morning. From what I have gathered, he was electocuted when a mic fell into the baptismal he was standing in. He cried our for help and went under. Doctors in the congregation came to his aid and he was rush to the ER but he didn’t make it.

The things on my heart

At the moment I’m writing my diploma thesis for my study. If everything works out as planned I will have my diploma in round about three months. So I’m thinking a lot what will be the next steps in my life. The thing is that there are a lot of possibilites and I have to decide which way I want to go. God has put a very special vision on my heart some years ago and know is the time to decide which is the next step to see it becoming a bit more reality. While thinking about these things I read Steve Taylor’s“Out of Bounds Church?’. A special part make my heart burn like fire. It sums up everything that is in my heart and what I want to do. It’s about postmodern monasteries and cybermonks.

Could the postmodern monastery similarly help people enter into the life of the church by crossing the digital divide? Many emerging churches are using the Internet to bring the church to the masses, to give books to the illiterate as it were. But in using technology, we must be cautious not to focus on cool technology for the sake of being cool. Just as The Book of Kells was created not only to preserve the text but to honor God with a work of beauty, just as Sunday schools taught Bible stories not only to provide reading skills but spiritual skills, so too must the emerging church use technology as a means to a greater end – an invitation to life with God.
In order to remain spiritual and missional, I would suggest a postmodern monastery be earthed in physical space. While the virtual world might offer an initial peg community, it is essential that there be a physical space for human connection within an ethical community.
As with the ancients, postmodern monks need to develop a rhythm of prayer, a shared daily spirituality that ensures their mission is about more than the neon glow of a screen. A postmodern monastery needs to take shape within a rhythm of appreciating people, creation, and God.
For those emerging churches who see this as their primary mission, my belief is that they will need to build a community of “monks,” a group of people with knowledge–not of copying books, but of Web design and filmmaking and graphic design. Some parttime, some sparetime, perhaps even some fulltime. Together, these monks can develop a few commercial projects to fund their lifestyle, such as authentic, low-budget, group creative projects–video downloads for the world. They can invite teenagers from the neighborhood to use the high-tech gear as a way of building relationships, sharing skills, and developing their spirituality.

First off, buy the book. It’s wonderful. Really helps to understand what this whole church in postmodern context stuff is all about.
Now, this vision has everything in it I want to do. Postmodern monasteries are the vision why I moved to Karlsruhe because I think the Kubik people have this on their hearts. Technology and especially the web is where I have my skills. The part about the spiritual rhythm is plain beautiful. We spend a lot of thinking about this over here. And helping kids and teenagers to create media and publish it themselves while connecting with them is definitely part of my calling. So the question is what I can do to let this vision become reality. And as I said before, I think Kubik is the place for that.
